Senior Trainer, General Services Department

1 years with the City of Houston – 20 years in Public Service

Why is public service important to you?

Public service is important because the work we do not only impacts us but generations coming after us. It is imperative that we leave our community better than we found it. I am new to the city of Houston but I have always been a public servant. As a classroom teacher for 20 years, I know the work we do as educators and public servants makes all professions possible. As civil servants, the work we do keeps everyone in the city mobile (public works), safe (HPD/HFD), literate (HPL), healthy and entertained (HPARD), making all of our residents well-rounded and Houston one of the best places to work and live.

Why did you choose a career in Public Service?

Though I chose to step outside of the classroom, I chose to remain a servant leader and educator, by joining the city’s general services division, because I have a heart for people and still want to serve the community. I enjoy meeting new people, being a problem solver, and offering an encouraging word to help brighten someone’s day. I also went into public service because my father worked in public service. As a section chief for waste water treatment, he was able to provide for our family, affect change in the community, and share his love for the city, with me. His passion motivated me and I am glad to work for the city now.

What would you say to inspire someone to begin a career in public service?

If you truly want to leave your mark and affect change in the city, become a civil servant. There are a plethora of divisions for you to explore in order to find your niche. One of the best things about working for the city is that you have access to resources to further your education and people who are willing to help you. They believe in promoting from within, rewarding hard work, and pride themselves on providing amazing customer service not just to the public, but to employees as well. The city of Houston is the place to be!!!
